CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: DG
Canon: Tin Man
Original or Alternate Universe: original
Canon Point: post-series
Number: 003 >> 025
Setting:
Welcome to the O.Z., bitch.
History: DG was born the youngest daughter of the Queen of the Outer Zone, an impetuous princess with magical powers and a knack for getting in over her head. She was doted on by her mother, and her older sister Azkadellia was her best friend in the world. The two princesses were inseparable, taking magic lessons and going on "adventures" together which sometimes resulted in some form of trouble. Like wandering into the woods to pick apples and finding themselves fending off a bear, as you do.
One such adventure began when DG heard what sounded like a child crying, and persuaded her sister to investigate with her. They followed the sound to a cave, but the helpless child turned out to be a Witch bent on using the sisters' magic to free herself. With their combined power they were able to hold her off, until a terrified DG let go of her sister and ran away. The Witch took possession of Azkadellia and not long after that killed DG, who was resurrected by the queen at the expense of her magic.
It was determined that the only way to ensure DG's safety would be to shroud her memories with magic and send her to the Otherside, where she grew up on a small Kansas farm with no knowledge of her true identity. She was cared for by two robots (who appeared and behaved totally human) named Hank and Emily, who were programmed to love and protect her until such time as she was ready to return home. They told her nursery rhymes and fairy tales which were actually stories of the O.Z. and her destiny. Fifteen years later DG began having dreams of a woman with lavender eyes warning her that a storm was coming.
Back in the O.Z. Azkadellia, having deposed her mother and well on her way to destroying the world, is made aware of a threat to her power on the Otherside. She sent her best men to dispose of this threat, but instead they brought DG and her "parents" back to the O.Z. In short order DG met a headcase named Glitch, a tin man named Cain, and an empathic Viewer called Raw. They set off to search for DG's parents, but soon found themselves on a journey to save the world.
Over the course of this adventure DG formed a deep bond of friendship with her traveling companions, as they saved each other's lives and helped one another recover missing parts of their identity. She also discovered the truth about her past, and her role in her sister's possession. Spurred on by the need to make amends, she used her new found memories (and some good old-fashioned Power of Love) to rescue Azkadellia, defeat the Witch, and return light to the O.Z.
Personality: Growing up in Kansas, DG always believed that there was something more out there, that she was missing out on something fundamental in her life. She is an artist and a dreamer, fascinated by the beautiful and fantastic. Her restless spirit craved freedom, and she frequently found escape flying along the highways on her motorcycle or through sketching and painting. According to her mother's adviser she inherited the traits of being "feisty, but fair" from the queen. She got her artistic talents from her father, but it seems her mechanical skills are all her own.
She has a tendency to be both headstrong and impulsive, with a reckless streak that leads her to act first and question later. On more than one occasion she literally charged into a dangerous situation with nothing but a sturdy stick and some righteous indignation to defend herself with. DG also takes risks on people, is willing to give anyone a chance, and, hating to be underestimated herself, will usually stick up for the underdog. She can have problems with authority figures; while she is likely to at least listen to someone more knowledgeable than she is, she is unlikely to give respect unless it is earned.
Her sense of humor is a bit muted and sarcastic, she's hardly a cut-up but will make the obvious smart remark. She uses humor as a defense mechanism to diffuse a situation, laughing in the face of danger as a show of bravado. It helps that she is highly adaptable and able to accept things - from guys with zippers on their heads claiming to have only half-a-brain to finding out that she's the magical princess of a fairyland - in her stride.
Speaking of being a princess: as of her canon point DG has only been aware of this facet of her life for a week. While she did readily take up the role in order to save her sister and her new found home, in a dream conversation with her mother she identified herself as a waitress and part-time student. It's highly unlikely she'll claim the title, as to her princesses mean Disney, not Kansas farmgirls with mud on their sneakers, engine grease on their overalls, and paint on their hands.
DG tends to call things as she sees them, and isn't afraid to use blunt honesty to get her point across. She is not deliberately cruel, however, and would do anything to aid, protect, and comfort those she loves, both friends and especially family. Family - whether a blood relation or someone she's claimed as such - is the most important thing in the world to her, and she will sometimes put loyalty to her family before sense and reason.
Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:
Magical Powers - DG's a (good) witch, and while it would take years of training for her to reach her full potential there's evidence she could be extremely powerful. As such, I'm happy to nerf her from both the she-has-no-experience angle and the let's-tamp-that-down-a-bit one. I'll break her abilities down by what she actually did in canon and what other witches could do, which she may or may not develop depending on modly blessing.
Things DG did in canon
→ Telekinesis - This takes a great deal of concentration, and I imagine that the larger the object and the more precise the movement, the more concentration it would require. I can also put a limit on the size-weight of what she can affect.
→ Restoring plant life - DG was able to revive a tree from dead to fruitful within moments. If the need for this ability ever arises, it could be very draining.
→ Protective barrier - with help from her sister DG was able to create and maintain a force field which withstood a lengthy magical attack. Without Az's support I imagine summoning such a shield would be incredibly draining, very temporary, and would only hold off one attack.
Things other witches did which I imagine DG might be able to eventually develop/accidentally discover she can do. These powers are purely speculative, would take a long-ass time to manifest, and I'm absolutely willing to accept a veto on them.
→ Size manipulation - Azkadellia was able to shrink people down to pocket-sized, but if/when DG ever develops this power it would only affect inanimate objects (shrinking them down and then reverting them to regular size). Her ability to maintain the effect would be temporary, ten minutes at the longest and increasingly shorter based on the size discrepancy.
→ Teleportation - Az was also able to teleport by clapping her hands. If/when this power is developed, it would be limited to teleporting herself, her distination would have to be within her line of sight, and it would sap her of a great deal of energy.
General Humany Stuff
DG is fairly agile and athletic: her escape from the munchkins involved swinging from a hanging cage onto a suspension bridge, then climbing down a rope. She also has some impressive strength and durability, as she survived jumping off a cliff into a river and, upon being thrown from a balcony, was able to catch herself, hang on, and haul herself to safety. Her artistic talents include both sketching and painting, and she's a reliable mechanic.
For weaknesses she is purely human and thus vulnerable to injury, disease, and death. She lacks anything like proper fighting skills, as her tactics seem to be hit-it-with-a-stick. Also, while she was able to maintain her motorcycle and help repair a wind-powered generator, it's unlikely she'd be able to make heads or tails of an advanced spacecraft's technology without a lot of trial and error.
Inventory:
- a silver locket containing a picture of herself on one side and one of her (robot) parents on the other
- a small doll in a green dress
- a sketchpad and set of colored pencils
- her dark brown leather bomber jacket.
Appearance:
One. dog not included, and two.
She's Zooey Deschanel and thus adorkable. DG's about 5'6" with long, dark, wavy hair (and bangs, gotta have the bangs), and is in possession of some quite impressive baby blue eyes. She tends to have good posture and can throw around some attitude with a lift of her chin or planting her hands on her hips.
Age: It's never stated outright but canon hints at 20. I personally go with 22.
AU Clarification: n/a
SAMPLES
Log Sample:
DG's plan had been to keep moving, figuring that if she felt like she was getting somewhere physically she'd make progress lifting the mental fog. As the hours had passed and her memories remained jumbled she found herself wondering if this was how Glitch felt all the time.
Assuming that he had been real, that any of it had been real.
"Get a grip," she muttered and took the next left off the corridor. This lead to a vast, plaza-like space with seating areas and soaring pillars that reminded her of the Northern Island. She sat at the base of one column, then reached into her pockets to retrieve the locket and the doll.
For a few moments she studied the locket with its pictures from the life that had never felt like her own and which had turned out to be...okay, not a lie, just a whole lot of omitted truths. It was like she'd been adopted and raised in a witness protection program, her parents had been parents but not her mother and father--
DG closed the locket and clutched it tight in her fist. No, she'd loved them, even when they fought, and they'd loved her too despite being robots. The warmth and the caring had been true, and that was all that mattered as she clasped the chain around her neck and dropped the locket under her jumpsuit's collar. What's really important is family.
That left the doll, which she held so it perched upright in the palm of her hand. DG stared at it, every detail familiar and foreign and she took a deep breath, closed her eyes, concentrated...
Her sister's tight embrace, her mother's joyful eyes, her father's proud smile. Her friends, so much smarter and stronger and braver than they believed themselves to be. The long, impossible journey to bring light back to a land fallen to darkness, the same light that flowed through her and showed her the way forward.
A breeze touched her face and DG opened her eyes to see the doll hovering, spinning above her outstretched hand. Her eyes widened and she snatched it out of the air, letting her held breath out with a whoosh.
"Okay," she said with a slow nod. "Okay, I'm...a magical princess." She snorted and looked up, shaking her head. "I'm a magical princess. In space."
That was too much and she doubled over laughing, the doll held tight to her chest.
Comms Sample:
[ the feed opens abruptly with a pencil being slammed down onto a sketch pad, then the communicator is picked up to show a clearly aggravated young woman. her lip is curled and she shakes her head. ]
Okay, when I was a kid I'd sneak out onto the roof looking for UFOs, like I was gonna hitch a ride or something. This? [ she gestures wildly with her free hand to indicate the dining area she'd settled in. ] This isn't what I had in mind. Where are epic battles with lasers and the...crazy alien planets?
[ she looks down at her sketchpad, and whatever she's drawn makes her expression soften. her hand drops to the paper and she sighs. ]
